HubSpot AI segments: Reviewing Breeze-generated criteria
HubSpot lets you describe an audience in natural language to generate segment filters with Breeze. Its September 2026 update describes reviewing and refining filters before saving. Official September update
Define the audience before using AI. This guide provides a criteria worksheet and checks for unintended inclusion.
Active and static segments differ
Segments were previously called lists. Active membership updates with criteria; static membership preserves the saved selection and can be edited manually. Official explanation
| Decision | Consider active | Consider static |
|---|---|---|
| Membership changes | Continuously track qualifying records | Preserve a selection at a point in time |
| New records | Add matching records automatically | Keep the current review group fixed |
| Maintenance | Check criteria and changes | Check the selection version and manual edits |
Even for a one-off message, decide whether membership should update during preparation. The communication type alone does not settle the choice.
Translate interest into recorded conditions
“People likely to buy” leaves room for conflicting interpretations. Specify properties, dates, required actions, and exclusions.
Activity and target object:

Inclusion criteria and supporting properties:
Period and reference date:
Conditions all required (AND):
Alternative qualifying conditions (OR):

This explains your criteria; it does not ask AI to infer unrecorded behavior.
Check AND and OR against the intended meaning
This is an illustrative design, not actual customer data or a universal recommendation.
Matches the target industry
AND
(requested a consultation OR requested product material)
AND
confirmed not yet contracted for the target product
Moving parentheses can include records outside the intended industry. A blank contract date should mean “not contracted” only if your data definition supports that interpretation.
| Example record | Check |
|---|---|
| Meets every requirement | Included as intended |
| Industry outside scope | Excluded despite engagement |
| Unknown contract status | Not silently treated as uncontracted |
| Matches an exclusion | Not restored by another OR branch |
Agree on property meanings with sales or data owners. Clarifying the records may solve the problem before any AI work is needed.
Generate and inspect filters before saving
Open “CRM > Segments,” choose “Create segment,” then “Start with AI.” Describe the object, type, and conditions; review the resulting filters before saving. Creation requires Edit Segment permission. Official steps
Some conditions and associated-object options depend on the subscription. Verify availability and labels in your account.
Compare generated criteria with your worksheet. Use “Test matches” to inspect representative records. Criteria testing
Separate saving a segment from executing a campaign
Membership alone does not establish that a person can receive marketing email. Check channel conditions, deliverability status, and overlapping communications separately.
- Verify filters and records, then save the segment.
- Identify the email, ad, or sales activity using it.
- Check that activity's requirements and record status.
- Review content, destination, and overlapping messages.
- Record audience size, executed actions, and outcomes separately.
A larger segment does not prove more deliveries or sales. For active segments, retain records of the audience at execution time.

Examples to include, exclude, and classify as unknown:
Identify changes in meaning caused by AND/OR, dates, exclusions, and unknowns.
Do not infer customer attributes or actions absent from the input.
Suggest record conditions to test before saving.
Start with included, excluded, and unknown examples. Shoryaku AI can discuss audience and campaign planning from your business context. It does not connect to HubSpot or save segments; verify records and settings in HubSpot.
