What are AI Overviews? SEO practices and how to measure results
AI Overviews are Google Search features that summarize an answer with AI and link to supporting pages. In Japanese, they are shown as “AIによる概要.”
For website acquisition, begin with ordinary SEO and content that answers readers’ questions. This guide covers the features, their relationship to SEO, eligibility, improvements, and measurement. Choose one page and check both its settings and the answers it still needs.
AI Overviews versus AI Mode
AI Overviews help users grasp a topic within ordinary search results. They do not appear for every query.
AI Mode supports deeper research and complex comparisons. Google’s AI features and websites guidance explains that the models and methods can differ, so answers and links may differ too.
Supporting links can create another route to your website. Visibility and actual inquiries or revenue should be evaluated separately.
How AI Overviews relate to SEO and GEO
SEO improves discovery in search. GEO is a term used for improving visibility in generative AI answers.
Google’s generative AI optimization guide explains that its generative search features build on Search ranking and quality systems. For Google Search, do not treat GEO as separate from SEO. That statement does not establish how every other AI service works.
Before adding topics, check whether existing pages sufficiently answer their readers. For “high Google Ads CPA,” definitions alone are insufficient: explain which figures to inspect and how to decide what comes next.
Eligibility checks for AI Overviews
| Check | Where | Next step if there is a problem |
|---|---|---|
| Can the page be fetched? | robots.txt, hosting, URL inspection | Investigate unintended crawling restrictions |
| Is it indexed? | Search Console URL inspection | Check exclusion reasons and noindex |
| Is it eligible for snippets? | Page preview controls | Inspect settings such as nosnippet |
| Is generative-search participation excluded? | Search Console settings | Check inherited parent-property controls too |
| Can key explanations be read? | Public body content | Provide text alongside image-only explanations |
Google says pages must be indexed and eligible for search with snippets. Meeting requirements does not guarantee inclusion.
Also inspect Search Console’s generative AI control. The official help describes Settings > Search generative AI and possible inheritance from a parent property. Inclusion controls and Google-Extended training controls serve different purposes.
If Search Console is not set up, begin with Search Console and GA4 setup.
A content-improvement process
Answer the question at the beginning
For “what are internal links,” provide the definition first, then roles and placement. Let visitors recognize whether the page answers their question. Use search-intent types and research to organize that question.
Add examples and decision materials readers can use
Add records, steps, calculations, or checklists where they help. An explanation based on verified sources and your own illustrative examples can also be useful without firsthand measurements. Do not invent success stories.
The Google Ads CPA article shows how to break down cost and results and when missing information prevents a decision. Provide material readers can apply to their figures instead of only listing abstract benefits.
Link naturally to related information
Link to prerequisites and next steps when they have their own articles. Check for isolated important pages and outdated destinations. See internal-link placement and review.
Do not mass-produce similar pages or fragment sentences unnaturally for AI. Before adding special files such as llms.txt or special structured data, check whether readers can reach the information they need.
How to measure results
Inspect overall impressions and clicks in Search Console, and review eligible features in the generative AI performance report. Google’s control help links to the report.
In GA4, review inquiries and signups by landing page. Its measurement scope differs from Search Console, so numbers need not match. Do not assume referrer information identifies every Google AI-search visit.
Compare the same pages, periods, and queries, and record content or title changes. A single observed appearance in an AI answer does not establish ongoing visibility or business results.
A ChatGPT or Gemini content-check prompt
Check whether this page sufficiently answers its readers’ search question.
Keyword and reader’s situation:
Body:
Verified sources and business records:
Output:
- The question answered at the beginning
- Explanations missing before the reader can act
- Helpful examples, decision tables, or internal links to add
- Figures and proper names requiring verification
Requirements:
- Do not guarantee AI Overview inclusion or ranking gains
- Do not invent results
- Prioritize revising existing pages over creating similar pages
Shoryaku AI lets you discuss connected Search Console and GA4 figures and request article drafts. It does not automatically place content in AI Overviews. Start with an existing page that has impressions, then review eligibility settings and the answer in its body.
